Telford Orchestra

Last Saturday, 9th December, the entertainment took the form of a return visit by the Telford Orchestra under its conductor Michael Davey.

A varied programme began with the 'Entry of the Masters' by Richard Wagner - a typical Wagnerian piece, reminiscent of the 'Ride of the Valkyries'. This was followed by CorelIi's 'Christmas Oratorio' featuring Julia Johnson and Margaret Friar on violins. The third item featured Michael on the organ and was the Choral Prelude on In dulci jubilo' by J.S Bach - a somewhat boisterous piece which brought out the full power of the organ. (This, incidentally, is one of the items on the CD recently produced by Michael). The first half closed with Haydn's Symphony No.7 in C major 'Le Midi'.

The second half began with Roger Quilter's 'Children's Overture'- a lively piece in which several children's songs could be heard . Englebert Humperdink's 'Evening Prayer' was in contrast to previous items, being a quiet, dreamy, tuneful piece. The next item again featured Michael on the organ being a very quiet item entitled 'Christmas cradle song' by Alfred Hollins. This was followed by Frederickl Delius' 'Sleigh Ride' in which the sleigh bells could be discerned. The final orchestral item was Johann Straus' well known 'Radetsky March' in which the audience clapped enthusiastically in time with the rhythm - shades of the last night of the Proms. The concert closed with the audience joining with the orchestra to sing 'Once in Royal David's City' and 'O come all ye faithful'.

Altogether a very enjoyable evening's entertainment, with thanks to Michael and the orchestra. May we look forward to a further visit next year?

Noel Pike

It is with great sadness that we record the passing of Noel Pike who was a faithful and loyal officer in our Boys' Brigade company for over twenty years. At that time the company met on two nights each week as well as Sunday mornings Bible class or Church parade.
Attendance was consistently high at all meetings and Noel would always be there showing great enthusiasm and commitment. His cheerfulness and friendly disposition will be remembered with great affection by the many boys and staff whose lives he touched.
