Knowledge is power in Tanzania

Education has become a life-line for people whose traditional way of life is under threat in Tanzania. That’s according to a Methodist Relief and Development Fund (MRDF) partner organisation, which is helping tribes adapt to a changing world.

When the Tanzanian government implemented land restrictions in 2008 the Maasai’s nomadic lifestyle came under threat. The Maasai, who were free to move cattle around the Serengeti National Park, have been forced to set up permanent settlements and adopt unfamiliar farming techniques.

But it’s not just new farming methods that have to be learnt. The Maasai don’t traditionally speak Swahili – the principal language of Tanzania – and the nature of their nomadic life has meant that they have often never attended school. Nurada Kariato, a member of the Maasai community, found that her tribe struggled to communicate with the new communities they were mingling with and this made earning an income even more difficult. “Going to school never used to be an issue,” she said. “We worked hard on tending our cattle, but now we need education to adapt to this new life.”

An MRDF partner organisation has put education right at the heart of its work with the Maasai communities. By providing basic adult literacy and numeracy classes to people like Nurada the local organisation is helping the Maasai to adapt during this transitional period. The acquisition of new skills has led to more income-generating opportunities for the Maasai. Nurada, and many others, learnt about profit and loss and how to negotiate business transactions in Swahili. As a result, they are now running a thriving jewellery-making business.

Since 2005, MRDF has helped over 10,000 Maasai people learn how to read, write and set up small businesses. The work is vital in ensuring the survival of communities forced into a new way of life.
