Newsletter Issue no. 6
Spring 2008
First of all, I must apologise for the delay in producing this Newsletter but I would like to assure you that we are all increasing our efforts to do our bit to protect God’s world. In fact it is congratulations all round! (But we mustn’t be complacent!).
Newsletters in future will be produced three times a year.
News “Round up” from the organisations.
The Boys’ Brigade is raising cash for its youth work by recycling mobile phones and printer cartridges. Please see the Notice Board or contact a BB officer for more information.
Recycling your plastic bottle tops (see container in the kitchen) will raise money for equipment/holidays etc. for those with learning difficulties. This is organised by Angela in the office.
We welcome the Rainbows who are collecting small plastic bottles.
The office staff are recycling used postage stamps for charity.
Our Girls’ Brigade planted daffodils to enhance the environment around the church adding to the existing display.
Barbara continues to collect old greetings cards to make new cards for sale. These are only 25p each – a bargain!
The office staff also recycle paper/card/files whenever possible. A local firm, Lyreco, have supplied us with unwanted card, paper and windowed envelopes etc for office use.
For coffee mornings there are now brown paper bags for cakes etc and recycled plastic bags are used for non food items. Please see Barbara Murray if you would like some brown paper bags.
Fashion Show
In January, on behalf of the Green Team, Diane Parkin presented the Severn Hospice with a £50 cheque, which was raised at the Ethical Fashion Show held last November. Please see the “thank you” letter as displayed on the Green Team Notice Board.

The Fairtrade stall has now sold over £1,100 worth of goods! Well done to everybody and thank you for your wonderful support.

Green Electricity
At the meeting of the last Church Council it was agreed that the church have its electricity supplied by Powergen 100%, Easy Green Tarriff. This will ensure that part of our supply will be produced from a sustainable source.

“Methodists among the Green Awards”
Four Methodist Churches were added to the growing number of churches who are becoming increasingly “green”. Initiatives include holding ecology fairs, showing the “Al Gore” film, using home made organic bread for communion, achieving a 20% cut in electricity usage, using a “green” hymn written by children etc. Project co-ordinator, June Rathbone, for eco-congregations says “There is a steady response from churches taking a part in the award scheme. We have up to 26 a year receiving awards and some are receiving their second award.

Close the Door!
The open door policy operated by many high Street stores particularly in cold weather means an unnecessary waste of energy. Some stores say they would loose trade if their doors were closed but other major stores say this is not the case. What do you think?
Have we a lesson to learn from this?
I’m with Larry Grayson.
Breaking News!
Our Carbon Footprint is to be measured!!
We have been offered the chance to have our carbon footprint measured by the Telford Energy Agency Many thanks to them. This will give us a chance to measure how we are doing and see how we might improve.
