Wellington Methodist Church and Centre

Newsletter Issue no. 4

October 2007

coffee morning, Sunday service with an environmental theme and the farm visit with nature walk.  This October we will be focussing on organising the forthcoming fashion show.  Thank you to all who help and support the Green Team.

Goodbye Elaine!

As many of you already know, the Centre Coordinator, Elaine Valentine will be leaving her post here at church to return full-time to university.  Both she and her husband will be studying for a 4-year Environmental Degree.  She will still be able to join in Green Team events but will not be as heavily involved as she is at present.

Fashion Show

The fashion show on Saturday 3rd November will be featuring ethical clothing as well some second hand frocks.  It looks like it’s going to be a great night.  There will also be stalls and refreshments.  Entry is £2 to include a drink.  Doors open at 6.30pm with the show beginning at 7.00pm.

Thank you to all who have offered to be models and to help on the night.

Please tell all your family and friends and help support this ethical way of shopping for fashion.

Our Coffee Morning

Although coffee morning on a Thursday isn’t usually busy we did manage to raise £22.00.  So this will be used to help pay for the coach booked for the farm trip and nature walk.

Local Agenda 21

The annual general meeting of the LA21 was held here on the 5th September.  It was a busy meeting with representatives from several organisations.  The Green Team are pleased to promote links with other agencies and this proved to be successful.

Future events that will benefit all our organisations are in the pipeline.

Sunday Service & Farm Trip

This newsletter is being produced the day before the above event so look out in the next newsletter for an update.

Date of next meeting:

Still to be arranged.

WORKAID

The charity ‘Workaid’ tackle poverty in developing countries by supplying disadvantaged people with the tools they need to earn a living.  They can collect unwanted items from all over the UK, repair them and send them to vocational training projects, mostly in East Africa.

Thank you to Denice Morgan for bringing this to our attention.  For further information check their website at www.workaid.org and if anyone is willing to organise a collection here please attend the next meeting or speak to regular Green Team members such as Diane Parkin, Mary Lewis, Carol Bryan, David Corbett, Rose Wedge or Betty Robinson.

The next newsletter

In the absence of Elaine, the next Green Team newsletter will be produced by Mary Lewis so please pass on any information or ideas that you’d like to get published.

More ReCyling!

Diane has passed on some excellent ideas for recycling in our local area.

Two of them are:-

·        Children’s toys –

Donate old children’s toys and games consoles to Barnado’s in Wellington or to the NCH Project at Telford Share Care, Shawbirch.

·        Electrical equipment –

Donate working electrical equipment to Chairs & Spares on 01952 619197.  They will also take your half empty tins of paint to resell.

Our Evidence File

To apply for our Eco-congregation award we are required to keep an ‘Evidence File’ of all the trips, events, changes and so on that we have implemented. It has posters, notes and photographs and all the newsletters in it.  Anyone wishing to view this please call in to the main church office.   There is also a box file with various resources that have been collected.

Email from the BBC

“Hello! My name is Amanda Graham and I work as a researcher in the Religion and Ethics Department at the BBC in Manchester. I am putting together a show on reducing consumerism. It will address the ethical
and environmental issues surrounding consumerism and helps viewers make
more informed choices about what they buy. I am looking for people of pensioner age (individuals or groups) who have decided not to buy anything new, or to only buy ethically sourced goods and services. Do you know of anyone who could help me by
answering a few questions about their shopping choices?”
