Wellington Methodist Church and Centre

Newsletter Issue no. 2

June 2007

Our second meeting took place on Saturday 30th June after coffee morning with a turnout of eight.

The next meeting will take place on Tuesday 24th July at 7.30pm.

We now have a link on the church website so long on to find out more. www.wellingtonmethodistchurch.co.uk

We also have a notice board in the front foyer so again please take a look to see what is going on.

The car boot sale on the 7th July is being advertised as ‘green’ because it promotes reusing and recycling.

A recent meeting was held with Telford & Wrekin Council’s travel-to-work coordinator.  She passed on lots of information on car sharing, bus routes, funding a bike shelter.  Lots of good stuff, plus entry to a prize draw.  David Corbett has volunteered to be our link with this so give him some time to get more informed and he will be your contact for any information you need on how to get around in an environmentally friendly way.

Another meeting was held with an alternative supplier of our cleaning products.  We still have a bit on investigating to do but will let you who we choose once we have all the information in.  If anyone can advise on this it will be appreciated.

The weekly church newsletter will contain a ‘green tip’ each week so make sure you look out for it.

Recycling was a hot topic.  We will begin with sorting out the waste in the kitchen as it does pile up a bit and isn’t being separated.  Volunteers needed in this area especially for getting the ‘stuff’ to the recycling skips.  It was suggested that we put separate bins in the kitchen so that it can be sorted out immediately.  Groups are to be contacted to ensure this takes place.  Any ideas please let us know.  Telford & Wrekin Council’s recycling department are to be contacted for help and advice.

GREETING CARD

Barbara Murray has a large and varied selection of cards for all occasions.  These are handmade and of course, for charity.

Green electricity.  We are tied in to our current supplier for 12 months so just before this is up for renewal we shall obtain a greener quote.

A survey of the congregation will take place within the next few months.  A questionnaire will be drawn up ready for August.  It would be helpful to know who has contacts or who works in areas that could be helpful to us becoming an eco-congregation.  Anyone wishing to volunteer to conduct this survey please let Elaine know or come to the next meeting.

Lists on the front noticeboard give information on how ‘green’ we already are and provide a starting point from which to progress.  Please take a look.

At the last meeting we all agreed that we could perhaps hold a ‘fairtrade’ fashion show.  This is still being investigated and we’ll let you know.  If it does go ahead we will need lots of help.

Betty Robinson has kindly brought in some resources.  As these will build up and to make them accessible to all, we shall have to look at storing them somewhere.  Perhaps a ‘resource’ box could be put together and anyone wishing to have a read through for ideas or inspiration could then access it.

Betty has also suggested a local farmer who conducts guided walks showing people areas that he maintains for the wildlife.  Details to follow…..

Diane Parkin has pinpointed some areas that perhaps could be investigated or incorporated.  These are:

·        To pray for the healing of creation in worship times.

·        To use organic bread and wine in Communion.

·        To have access to Christian environmental books and resources.

·        To include environmental issues in our teaching/preaching programme.

We also need to investigate further how our children’s work can include environmental issues.

Eco-congregation was developed from a Pilot Study involving churches from across Britain and Ireland and dedicated in a service at St Paul's Cathedral in September 2000. A tree was planted in the churchyard to mark the occasion. The ecumenical service was led by senior church leaders and included a sermon preached by the Bishop of London. Eco-congregation Scotland was dedicated in a service at Dunblane Cathedral in March 2001.
